# Tawang Travel Guide: The Best 6N/7D Itinerary, Permits, Weather & Everything You Need to Know

Tawang is not just a destination — it is a journey through some of the most dramatic landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh.

From peaceful mountain villages and riverside valleys to Sela Pass, Tawang Monastery and the high-altitude Bumla Pass, the route offers a mix of nature, culture, adventure and Himalayan scenery.

### Day 1 — Guwahati → Shergaon via Bhairabkunda

Begin your Arunachal journey from Guwahati and drive towards Shergaon.

The route includes **Bhairabkunda**, scenic Himalayan foothills and ILP verification at the Balemu check gate before continuing towards Shergaon.

**Overnight:** Shergaon.

### Day 2 — Shergaon → Sangti Valley & Dirang

Continue towards the beautiful Sangti Valley with stops around **Bomdila Monastery, Dirang and traditional Monpa villages**.

The evening is kept relaxed, allowing you to enjoy the river and mountain surroundings.

**Overnight:** Sangti Valley / Dirang.

### Day 3 — Chug Valley & Sangti Valley

Instead of rushing towards Tawang, this itinerary keeps one full day for exploring the Sangti region.

Visit **Mandala Top, Chug Valley, Sangti Valley, bird-watching areas and traditional Monpa villages**, with time for relaxed riverside walks.

**Overnight:** Sangti Valley / Dirang.

### Day 4 — Sangti Valley → Tawang via Sela Pass

Start early for one of the most spectacular drives of the trip.

The route takes you through **Sela Pass, Sela Lake and Nuranang Falls**, followed by the drive towards Tawang.

Sela Pass is around **13,700 ft**, so this is also where the journey begins to feel significantly more high-altitude.

**Overnight:** Tawang.

### Day 5 — Bumla Pass Excursion & Tawang Sightseeing

This is the highlight for many travellers.

Take an early-morning excursion towards **Bumla Pass**, subject to the required permissions, weather, road and security conditions.

The day also covers **Madhuri Lake (Sangestar Tso), Tawang Monastery and Tawang Local Market**.

**Overnight:** Tawang.

### Day 6 — Tawang → Bomdila

Begin the return journey with stops including **Jaswant Garh War Memorial**, an optional Nuranang Falls stop, Bomdila Market and the Gompa area.

**Overnight:** Bomdila.

### Day 7 — Bomdila → Guwahati

After breakfast, drive back towards Guwahati.

Depending on the route and schedule, optional stops can include the **Hanging Bridge** and **Nameri National Park viewpoint**, followed by drop-off at Guwahati Airport or Railway Station.

Do You Need an ILP for Tawang?

**Yes. Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.** The current official Arunachal Pradesh eILP portal provides online tourist eILP applications, and the permit can be applied for individually or as a group.

For a Tawang trip, travellers should have their required identification and photograph ready for the permit application.

What About the Bumla Pass Permit?

Bumla Pass is a sensitive high-altitude border area, so visiting it is different from normal sightseeing.

A **separate permission/permit process is required**, and the visit depends on factors such as permit approval, weather, road conditions, security restrictions and local administration/defence regulations. The Tawang district administration maintains the official Bumla Pass permit documentation.

Best Time to Visit Tawang

The best month depends on what you want to experience.

### October – November: Best for Clear Mountain Views

For a first Tawang trip, **October and early November are excellent choices**. The weather is generally cooler and clearer after the monsoon, making it a popular period for mountain drives and sightseeing.

### March – May: Spring & Green Valleys

Spring brings greener landscapes and blooming vegetation, making March to May attractive for travellers who prefer pleasant mountain scenery rather than extreme winter conditions.

### December – February: Snow Season

If your priority is snow, winter can be magical. However, temperatures can fall below freezing and high-altitude routes may face temporary closures because of snow and weather.

Bumla should always be treated as **subject to actual conditions**, rather than guaranteed during winter.

### June – September: Monsoon

The monsoon brings heavy rainfall to the region and can increase the possibility of landslides, road delays and changes to mountain travel plans.

If travelling during this period, keep your schedule flexible.

Tawang Temperature: What Should You Expect?

Tawang is a high-altitude destination, so it can feel much colder than Guwahati or the plains.

Approximate conditions in Tawang town can vary from around **5–15°C during the milder travel months**, while winter can approach or fall below **0°C**. Higher locations such as Sela Pass and Bumla can be **significantly colder** than Tawang town.

Weather can change quickly at high altitude, so always carry layers and check the forecast before departure.

What Should You Pack for Tawang?
